Who we are

Jacqueline Baker - Chair of Governors

As a parent and step parent of four ranging from 25 to 16, my first experience of being a school governor was more than 20 years ago. This prompted a fascinating and rewarding experience including a decade as Chair at Whyteleafe School, attended by my two children - now in their twenties, and becoming an Advance Skills Governor and Associate Trainer with Babcock International (who run educational training in Surrey).

My second career after a family break developed from the huge amount I learnt from being a governor; I currently run my own business supporting school and academy boards appointing heads and senior leaders. On the flip side I also work with our aspiring leaders to improve their interviewing skills, so good people can secure headships.  Aside from work I love skiing, enjoy bridge and occasionally attempt to play golf.

I first became a parent governor in 1995. All four of my children were pupils at Warlingham from age 11 to 18. The first started in 1993 and the youngest left in 2009.

I am 59 years old, have been married to Diana for 37 years and we live locally in Sanderstead. I am a Chartered Accountant by training and am CEO at Bryden Johnson Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors in South Croydon. I am also a trained Business Coach.

Alex Ghattas - Governor

My son is a student at Warlingham and I wanted to be more involved with the school, through my appointment as a Community Governor.  I hope I can use my work and life experience to support the school achieve its ambitions. I have a BA(Hons) and am a qualified accountant (CIMA) but I currently find myself working in management consulting for one of the big 4 accountancy firms, where I specialise in finance, strategy and systems. I also spent some significant time in industry working for some large multinational organisations. My outside interests are largely sport-related although I do try and maintain an eclectic taste in music. I lived in Germany during some of my senior school years and am aware of the support students need to help them achieve their potential.

My professional career has been spent working as a solicitor and governance professional, both in Australia and in the UK.  I have worked predominantly in banks and financial services organisations, and have managed legal, company secretarial and compliance teams.  I have proved myself willing to say what needs to be said, and am committed to integrity in all things, including in business. I have a great love of simplicity, and the truth that simplicity can bring to us.  It is generally children and young people with their honest way of speaking, who best show us that answers rarely lie in complexity. I also have an abhorrence for abuse in any form, and know that it is for each of us as individuals to say no to it whenever and wherever  we may come across it.

I moved back to Warlingham after 17 years in Australia, and am enjoying being able to connect more with family here, and walking my dog in the glorious English countryside.

Karen Quinton - Governor

I have worked in adult learning, distance, online and professional education for most of my career.  In December 2016 I joined Omniplex, a small company creating e-learning for blue chip clients, and am responsible for all of its content development, training and client support services. For the previous nine years I was a senior manager at Kaplan Professional Education, a for-profit education provider, leading a team which created all of the online learning and assessment resources for accountancy students working towards their professional qualifications.  I have a degree in English, I am a qualified teacher and a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute.  My children have both attended Warlingham from Year 7 to Year 13, daughter has one more academic year to go before she leaves Sixth form. Life with two teenagers, a lumberjack, two rescued dogs and two rescued cats is seldom dull!

I am very pleased to have recently joined the governing body.  I have a long professional background within safeguarding and child protection as well as having experience in the recruitment and IT industry.

I am married with six children, the youngest of whom is currently in Year 8 at Warlingham, and I look forward to her siblings joining her in the years to come. I have a keen interest in music and the arts and greatly value these areas of the curriculum.  I am always prepared to ask the right questions, balancing holding the school to account for decision making whilst supporting and encouraging change to ensure I have a positive impact on the educational standards and wellbeing of students so that ultimately all staff and students alike exceed their potential and are valued members of the local community.

Sue Woodgate - Parent Governor

I have twins in Year 8 at Warlingham and was appointed as a Parent Governor in 2016. I am looking forward to being involved and assisting in the school’s objectives to continuously improve and raise standards whilst maintaining its strong ethos.

Roles I have undertaken, whether in my career as a Chartered Accountant or voluntarily have been hands-on, often requiring attention to detail to find ways to deal with issues in a practical and beneficial manner.

My motivation to support Warlingham School is triggered by the arrival of my Daughter in Year 7, hopefully to be followed by 2 other children in the next 4 years. I bring with me 36 years’ experience in Banking, latterly in the mid-Corporate field but covering cross-Divisional spells in Risk, Strategy, Operations and Retail. Externally, I achieved an MBA with Warwick Business School. Outside interests include most sport, both participating through running and watching, an enthusiasm stemming from my North East England roots. I hope to bring my experience, energy and enthusiasm to support a worthy and personal cause in Warlingham School.

Sarah Berke - Governor

I have been a parent governor for just over 6 years and I am currently chair of the Student Learning and Development committee.  My son is currently in Year 13.  I have been involved with education for most of my working life. I am currently a school teacher at a local primary school.
Prior to re-training as a teacher, I worked as a University administrator, managing and designing admissions and enrolment systems, both in this country, and in New Zealand where I lived for 10 years. I am really interested in all aspects of education especially life long learning.

I have worked at Warlingham for the past 12 years now as part of the Finance Team. I am currently Business Services Manager. My background has always been finance-based working for the Department of Health, Department of Food and Royal Bank of Scotland.
I have a 16 year old son who has a passion for all things sporty and I myself am a Football Association Accredited coach.

Angela Smith - Staff Governor

I started as a Teaching Assistant at Warlingham School in 2013 having completed my training. Prior to joining Warlingham, I spent 28 years working as a project manager in Investment Banking in the City of London.  I have recently trained as a Learning Mentor and am currently working with students in Sharman House.

I am married and have a son aged 12 years and a daughter aged 11 years. When I am not running them around to their clubs I enjoy dancing, both ballet and tap, something I have done since the age of 4. I like to visit the Theatre when I can, catching up on the latest musicals. During school holidays my family love to travel overseas.

I started teaching at Warlingham on a full-time basis in September 2010, having completed my final PGCE placement here.  I am a teacher of Science and also a Head of House at the school, which has allowed me to gain a large amount of knowledge and experience on a pastoral level.  I have previously been a member of the School's Associate Group, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Outside of the classroom, I am a keen footballer and run and play for an amateur club.  My interest in the sport spans to a professional level and I am an avid Tottenham Hotspur fan, trying to attend White Hart Lane as frequently as possible.  I also enjoy watching county and international cricket.

Juliet Billings - Staff Governor

I started working at Warlingham in 2009 as a teacher of mathematics, having completed my final PGCE placement here.  I am third in charge within the mathematics department which gives me the opportunity to work with many different members of staff due to having the responsibility of numeracy across the curriculum.  I am currently working on the Associate Group.  During my time at Warlingham I have mentored many different Newly Qualified Teachers which I really enjoy.

Away from the classroom I have a real passion for music. I enjoy playing the oboe and the piano and play in the school orchestra as well as listening to wide variety of styles including musicals, classical and rock music.
