Modern Languages

Overview

The Modern Languages department is made up of 5 highly qualified linguists who can teach 3 modern foreign languages, including French, Spanish and German, across key stages 3, 4 and 5. Excellent support is available for students of all abilities and the department also offers a range of extra-curricular activities to incentivise and motivate all those that study languages.

Key Stage 3 Schemes of Work

Year 7
Studio 1 (français): Students learn how to understand and give personal details about themselves, their school, their pastimes, school, where they live, their family and holidays across listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Viva – Libro 1 (Spanish):  Students learn how to understand and give personal details about themselves, their pastimes, school, where they live, their family and their diet across listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Year 8 
Studio 2 (français):  Students learn how to apply listening, speaking, reading and writing skills within the context of technology, a description of a trip to Paris, leisure, and local area.

Viva – Libro 2 (español):  Students learn how to apply listening, speaking, reading and writing skills within the context of food, illnesses, shopping, TV, music, and holidays.

Year 9
Studio 3 (français): Students apply the four core skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) within the context of keeping in touch with friends, healthy lifestyle, future plans, holidays and the environment.

Viva – Libro 3 (español):  Students apply the four core skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) within the context of cinema and special celebrations, work, healthy living, school and a description of trip to Madrid.

GCSE Course(s) Overview

Students study all of the following themes on which the assessments are based. 

Theme 1:  Identity and culture

Theme 2:  Local, national, international and global areas of interest

Theme 3:  Current and future study and employment

Students are given access to the digital version of the Student Book, which can be accessed on a range of devices and tablets.  

At the end of the course (end of year 11) students will be assessed in all four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Each skill is worth 25% of their French and/or Spanish GCSE.

A Level Course(s) Overview

During this course students will read and listen to authentic foreign language materials and will study aspects of the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of a country where the language is spoken. They will have the opportunities to develop their understanding and awareness of spiritual, moral, ethical, environmental, health and European issues. Students will extend and develop their knowledge of the grammar and the vocabulary of the foreign language and will use this to speak, write, read and: listen to the language.

Trip to a French/ Spanish restaurant (KS3)

Trip to Paris (Year 8)

French exchange trip to Bordeaux (KS4 and KS5)

Spanish trip to Salamanca, staying in host families and studying in a language school (KS4 and KS5)

Additional Information

Students have access to a comprehensive range of teaching materials that can support their independent learning and offer them a chance to consolidate and extend their existing knowledge and skills. There is also a computer suite, complete with audio equipment.

Support and guidance is also given to students wishing to take GCSE in their mother tongue.
