Wide Horizons

Warlingham has organised some terrific residential school trips in 2017-18.  Here is a flavour of the opportunities available during the school year:

Hola Salamanca!

Students studying Spanish in Years 10, 11 and 12 will enjoy a residential trip to the town of Salamanca, North West Spain -  21-27 January 2018.  The trip offers our students a real boost to language learning.  Staying with Spanish families throughout the trip, the students will attend Colegio Delibes, a Spanish language school for international students.  Alongside the daily language lessons, a wide range of excursions and visits have also been arranged, designed to enrich the cultural experience and to ensure our students return with some wonderful memories of their trip to Spain.

Bonjour Bordeaux!

Our French students will have the opportunity to take part in the annual French exchange trip during September/October 2018, with French students coming over the following March (2019).  The 2017 French Exchange students were hosted in Bordeaux where they enjoyed sizzling temperatures and returned with very positive feedback about their experiences in France.

New York, New York!

The Business Studies Department has organised its 10th annual educational trip to New York for Sixth Form Business and Economic students.  During the trip, which runs 6-10 February 2018, business visits will include the “World’s Greatest Arena” Madison Square Garden, New York’s third most popular tourist attraction Madame Tussauds, the “World’s Largest Department Store” Macy’s and an independent chocolatier in Brooklyn, JoMart Chocolates.   Alongside these business activities, a wide range of cultural and tourist visits have been organised, including: watching a New York Knicks basketball game, riding the express elevator to the 86th floor of the iconic Empire State Building, taking a ferry trip across the river to Staten Island to view the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, a thought-provoking visit to the 9/11 Memorial Park and Museum, a stroll around Central Park and a chance to see the bright lights of Times Square and Broadway.

Football and Netball Overseas Tour 2018

Our PE Department has managed to secure an amazing opportunity for a group of students to travel to Platja D’Aro (Spain) for a 5 day football and netball tour during the 2018 Easter holidays. The trip is open to all students in Year 8 and therefore we are taking two football and two netball teams. During the trip they will experience football and netball training sessions run by professional coaches; fixtures against other UK schools; and a day excursion to Barcelona (including shopping, a tour of the Nou Camp Stadium and Museum). In the evening the students will also be able to enjoy our evening entertainment; disco, karaoke and bowling nights.

Activities Week 2018 – Year Groups 7-9

During the summer term, our Year 7 Summer Camp trip provides one week’s stay for up to 140 students in the beautiful Langdale Valley in the Lake District.  Alongside numerous exciting outdoor activities organised by Keswick Adventure, students are fully involved in ‘camp life’ helping to put up the tents, prepare food and sharing other group responsibilities.

Our Year 8 students may join the Activities Week trip to Paris where they spend an action-packed week full of new and challenging experiences.  Excursions include a visit to the Eiffel Tower, the palace of Versaille and a day at Disneyland Paris.  Students fully engage themselves in Paris’ rich culture and experience life in another country, having the opportunity to try out their language skills.  Up to 120 students take part in this this residential trip each year.

Year 9 students can take a one week trip to the PGL centre in Shropshire.  The PGL programme of activities is excellent, with students learning new skills, developing team work, and communication skills. The trip, with 120 places is very popular with both students and staff, with all parties gaining positive experiences and skills.

Icelandic Adventure – February 2019

Our Geography Department has managed to secure an amazing opportunity for a group of Sixth Form students to travel to Iceland during the February 2019 half term.  The trip will include a visit to the foot of Eyjafjallajökull – the volcano that brought Europe’s air travel to its knees in 2010; a full tour of the ‘Golden Circle’ including the spectacular waterfalls of Gullfoss, Seljalandsfoss and Skogarfoss, the Strokkur and Great Geysir geysers and Thingvellir, the canyon where you can walk between the North American and Eurasian Plates!  There will be an extended dip in the Blue Lagoon, a glacier hike and an evening expedition to the Northern Lights.

CERN Laboratories, Geneva, January 2019

Our A Level Physics students will have the opportunity to visit the CERN Laboratories in Geneva, Switzerland in January 2019.  This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to immerse themselves in the research activities at this extraordinary facility.  During their stay, students will enjoy a tour of the CERN labs and particle accelerator.  There will also be time to take in the sights of this beautiful city.

You will be able to read trip reports, written by students, in our regular school newsletters.  To see what else we have planned in 2018, please visit the School Trips and Visits section.
