Key Stage 4 Science

Year 10
The Year 10 course, is divided into three different pathways designed to best suit the needs of each pupil.

Double Science

The majority of students follow the ‘Double Science’ route. This means a separate course is studied in each Year 10 and 11, resulting in the award of two distinctly different qualifications.

The Year 10 course comprises six modules, 2 biology, 2 chemistry and 2 physics. Students will study two of these modules at a time which will then be assessed by external examinations. The pupils then move on to the next two modules and so on.

The examination dates of these modules for Year 10 are as follows:

20th November 2009
5th March 2010
24th June 2010

The average of these six units is added to the marks for their ‘coursework’ to give their GCSE grade for Year 10.

The course followed is the Edexcel GCSE in Science (2101) the 6 units are below:

Biology 1a – Environment & Genes
Biology 1b – Electrical & Chemical Signals, Use Misuse and Abuse
Chemistry 1a – Patterns in Properties, Making Changes
Chemistry 1b – There’s one Earth, Designer Products
Physics 1a – Producing & Measuring Electricity, You’re in charge
Physics 1b – Now you see it now you don’t, Space & its Mysteries

Triple Science

Students following the ‘Triple Science’ pathway will start the year in a similar way to the double students and then move on to extended work later in the course.

These student will have a different exam structure, they will sit three units on 20th November and three more on 5th March.

Units Biology 1a, Chemistry 1a and Physics 1a - 20th November 2009

Units Biology 1b, Chemistry 1b and Physics 1b - 5th March 2010.

Single Science

Students who are following the ‘Single Science’ pathway, are completing a Btec First in Applied Science. The aim of this course is to study Science from a work-based perspective and therefore to gain employable skills, whilst also studying Science.

This course meets the needs of pupils who find formal examinations more challenging. The course is assessed by the completion of a portfolio of work, which is moderated both in school and externally. Successful completion of the portfolio results in the award of a pass at Btec First level, this is regarded to be the equivalent to two C grades at GCSE.

Year 11
The Year 11 course is sub-divided still further, however the students who have started either ‘Triple Science’ or ‘Single Science’, will simply continue along these routes.

The students who started out on the ‘Double Science’ pathway in Year 10, will now either go on to study Additional Science or Btec Science. Those students that found the Science course in Year 10 to be very challenging will be selected to study for the Btec course, the change in format is seen as a way to maximise their potential.

Exam Dates for Year 11 Science:

19th November 2009 – re-sit module (most students involved)

14th January 2010 – Biology exam (triple only)

18th January 2010 – Chemistry exam (both double and triple Students)

20th January 2010 – Physics exam (triple only)

3rd March 2010 – Final retake module (very few students)

21st May 2010 – Biology exam (double and triple)

26th May 2010 – Chemistry exam (triple only)

28th May 2010 – Physics exam (double and triple)
