What is the Duke of Edinburgh Award all about?
There are four sections to the award:
Service
To encourage service to individuals and to the community
Skill
To encourage the discovery and development of practical and social
skills and personal interests
Physical Recreation
To encourage participation and involvement in physical activity
Expedition
To encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery
Who can take part?
Year 9 students - Bronze Level
Year 10 students - Silver Level
Sxith Form students - Gold Level
The first three sections are undertaken by individuals in their own time (usually for an hour per week) for a given period of time, which increases with each level of the award.
The expedition section consists of various training sessions, followed by a practice and then a final assessed expedition (again varying in length depending on award level). Training sessions cover topics such as camp craft, first aid, map reading and navigation, emergency procedures, expedition equipment etc. They are held weekly in the LRC at the following times:
