Warlingham School Year 8 students presented Demelza Hospice Care For Children charity with a cheque for £424.55 on Friday, 6th November. Demelza Area Fundraising Manager for South and Central London, James Hunt, came to school to speak to the year group about the charity’s work and receive the cheque on its behalf. Mr Hunt said: ‘The achievement of class 8N was absolutely fabulous. The amount raised was particularly impressive and all the staff and children should be proud of themselves. Their fundraising will help us to continue providing our services across South London'
Demelza is an organisation providing hospice care for over 600 children with life-limiting illnesses and their families across Kent, East Sussex and South London. Warlingham School Design & Technology teacher, Ruth Webb, organiser of the fundraising efforts, had raised money for Demelza in the past as a friend was helped by the charity when
their son, Connor was born with problems and sadly passed away. Ms Webb said: ‘Demelza helped my friend and her family throughout Connor’s life and after by offering them amazing support during a very sad and tough time.’ When she became aware of the ‘Make Room In Your Heart’ campaign at the end of July, she recruited her tutor group to help raise funds to support it. Upon return to school in September, the tutor group arranged to hold their own ‘charity week’ during which they collected small change in the school’s dining hall, sold Demelza pin badges featuring a design by award winning artist, Damian Hirst. They also held a ‘mufti day’, cake sale and a ‘design a heart’ competition. During this week, they managed to raise a fantastic £424.55 which they proudly presented to Demelza during an assembly last week.
